for How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night? by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
“How does a dinosaur say good night when Papa comes in to turn out the light? / Does a dinosaur slam his tail and pout? / Does he throw his teddy bear all about?” Yolen’s Mezozoic miscreants live in modern houses and have human parents who respond as they would to small humans. The original humor of the text is enhanced by Mark Teague’s brightly colored illustrations that show young dinosaurs towering over their human parents, sometimes filling the entire bedroom as they stomp and roar. Although each dinosaur is anthropomorphized, there is enough realistic detail to accurately characterize the ten different species that appear throughout the book. Adults unable to identify a particular dinosaur will be assisted by labels cleverly placed on each double-page spread. (Ages 2-6)
